1962 Chevy Pickup, Work Begins
Since the plan was to have this truck be a daily driver, a few basics were in order........
1st was a complete
fluids change. The gear oil in the transmission looked pretty good, but
the stuff that came out of the differential looked like chocolate milk. I
replaced all of the seals in the rear axle and adjusted the backlash while
it was apart.
The steering needed a
new rag joint, an idler arm and a good dose of synthetic grease in all of
the zerks, (zerts?).
I installed new brake
shoes and shocks all around and replaced the front wheel
bearings.
The original point
distributor vac advance didn't work, and replacements were not to be
found. So I installed an H.E.I. ignition from Langdons Stovebolt along
with plugs and wires.
New Michelin radials
replaced the tired and rotten old bias ply/radial tire combination. Along
with some refurbished Chevy rally
wheels.
The camper mirrors were
removed and screw holes were temporarily filled with some white plastic
plugs found and the local Ace Hardware. The original side view mirror was
returned to it's proper location after being found in a box of spare parts
left in the camper.
After the basic
mechanical necessities were tended to, the truck decided it was time to
stick a couple of valves, bend some push rods and collapse some lifters.
The vehicle came with a build sheet showing a "rebuild" of the engine only
7000 miles prior. I suspect that the engine work was more reconditioning
than rebuilding and the fact that it sat still for several years didn't
help much. But after many phone calls I finally found the parts and got it
purring again. Although I could never get the lifters to stop ticking when
it was cold.
